GRADES 3-4
This year, students will develop skills in all four modes of Spanish language communication; comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, they will gain an appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world. We use the series, ¡Viva el español!, published by McGraw-Hill. Supplementary materials such as Spanish language books, music, games, and videos are also used.
HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS
Students will receive homework each class. Usually, this will be a worksheet, workbook page, or memorizing vocabulary words. Sometimes, the assignment is to return a graded test, signed by a parent. Homework is due at the next class meeting. Late assignments will receive a late grade of 90%. If the assignment is to return a signed test, the test itself must be returned with a signature in order to receive a grade. An email or note from a parent is not acceptable.
I strongly encourage students to practice the vocabulary words for a few minutes each day. Students will be expected to know these words in order to participate in class. Furthermore, they will be expected to remember this vocabulary in upcoming years so that we may continue to build on the skills and structures studied in previous years. Many students find flashcards to be helpful.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
Students are expected to come to class prepared. They should bring their workbook, their Spanish folder, their Spanish notebook and a pencil/pen to every class. They are expected to try their best and to say something every day. Class Participation grades reflect effort in speaking, listening, writing or reading, not mastery of grammatical structures.
TESTS
Students will have a test at the end of each unit. They will receive a study sheet to help them prepare. The workbook is an excellent tool for studying, as all the words and structures tested appear on the first page of each chapter.
GRADES
Homework and Class Participation and Tests are each worth 30% of the final grade. Completed tests, signed by a parent are worth 10% of the final grade.
GRADE 5
This year, students will develop skills in all four modes of Spanish language communication; comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, they will gain an appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world.
This year, students will work with a centers-based curriculum.
WORKSHEETS/WRITTEN WORK
Students are expected to complete worksheets, puzzles and workbook pages for each unit.
Students are encouraged to practice the vocabulary words for a few minutes each day. Students will be expected to know these words in order to participate in class and to continue to build their expressive language skills throughout the year.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
Students are expected to come to class prepared. They should bring their workbook, their Spanish folder, their Spanish notebook, their iPad, and a pencil/pen to every class. Students are expected to participate fully in each curriculum center appropriately, including but not limited to partner speaking activities, working cooperatively in small groups, staying on-task, and producing work that meets acceptable work standards. Class Participation grades reflect preparation, achievement, and effort in speaking, listening, reading or writing.
TESTS/PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS
Students will have a test at the end of each unit. They will receive a study sheet to help them prepare. The workbook is an excellent tool for studying, as all the words and structures tested appear on the first page of each chapter. The test may be written or may be a speaking performance assessment or a combination of both. In written activities, correct spelling is expected, consequently, spelling counts.
All graded tests must be signed by a parent and returned the following class period. The actual test must be submitted. A note or email from a parent is not acceptable. If a test is returned later than the next class period, a late grade of 90% will be entered into the gradebook.
Students may re-take tests. To do so, they must schedule a time outside of regular class time. In addition, they must bring an Indication of Remediation to the scheduled re-take appointment. An Indication of Remediation is a written activity or exercise that would show that the student has learned the material. An example would be writing all the vocabulary words ten times each. The reason for this is to facilitate success on the retake.
ONLINE ACTIVITIES
Students must bring a functioning, charged iPad to every class. Additionally, appropriate and on-task use of technology is expected.
GRADES
Worksheets/Written work, Class Participation, and Online Activities are each worth 22% of the final grade. Tests/Performance Assessments are worth 25% of the final grade. Completed tests must be signed by a parent and returned the following class period. This is worth 9% of the final grade.
